What FNB offers
FNB’s Personal Loan is an unsecured loan of up to R450,000, with a fixed interest rate personalised to the applicant and fixed monthly repayments for the agreed term. It can be used for a wide range of purposes, from home improvements and medical expenses to consolidating existing credit agreements into a single monthly repayment.
Key numbers
Interest rates and fees
FNB personalises the interest rate on every loan based on the applicant’s credit profile and affordability. For long-term loans (terms of 1 to 66 or up to 72 months, depending on the loan type), the rate is set in your quotation and must comply with the applicable National Credit Act limit. Short-term credit has separate limits; confirm the first-loan and subsequent-loan rules in the applicable regulations. A once-off initiation fee and a monthly service fee apply on top of interest, and credit life insurance is mandatory on long-term loans to cover repayments in the event of death, disability, retrenchment or loss of income.
| Item | Representative example (R30,000 over 24 months at 18.00% p.a.) |

| Interest rate p.a. | 18.00% |
| Monthly credit life insurance premium (where applicable) | R100 |
| Monthly service fee | R69 |
| Total monthly instalment | R1,796 |
| Once-off initiation fee (where applicable) | R1,207.50 |
| Total cost of credit | R41,445 |
This is FNB’s own published representative example, not a quote — your actual rate, fees and total cost of credit will depend on your personal risk profile, income and the loan amount and term you choose.
Eligibility and documents
- Must be 18 years or older
- Permanently employed or self-employed with a stable income
- Permanent South African resident
- Salary or income must be paid directly into a bank account
Existing FNB customers with income paid into their FNB account for at least 3 months and an up-to-date profile often need no extra documents beyond a valid South African green bar-coded ID or smart ID card and proof of residence not older than 3 months. Non-FNB customers additionally need to provide their latest 3 months’ payslips or bank statements, or an ITA34 plus 3 months’ bank statements if self-employed.
Loan features
Take-A-Break in January
FNB automatically allows qualifying personal loan customers to skip their instalment every January. Eligibility requires a loan term longer than 6 months and an up-to-date repayment record heading into January. Interest continues to accrue and the loan term extends by one month; customers can opt out and keep paying to settle faster and save on interest.
No penalty for early settlement
Customers can pay extra into their loan at any time, or settle it in full before the end of the term, without incurring a penalty fee.
Credit Switch and Top-Up
FNB’s Credit Switch lets customers consolidate multiple credit agreements into one FNB Personal Loan with a single interest rate, fee structure and monthly repayment; the initiation fee for Credit Switch is waived from 1 July 2026. Existing FNB Personal Loan customers can also Top Up an existing loan rather than take out a new one, avoiding a second initiation fee and a second monthly service fee for the overlapping period.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum FNB Personal Loan amount?
Up to R450,000, over a maximum repayment term of 72 months, at a personalised fixed interest rate.
What interest rate does FNB charge on personal loans?
Long-term loan rates are personalised per applicant and subject to the applicable NCA limit. Short-term credit has separate limits, with different treatment of first and subsequent loans.
Is credit life insurance compulsory on an FNB Personal Loan?
Yes, for long-term loans. FNB’s Customer Protection Plan covers repayments in the event of death, disability, retrenchment or income loss, or a customer can cede an equivalent policy of their own.
Does FNB charge a penalty for paying off a loan early?
No. FNB does not charge penalty fees for extra payments or full early settlement of a personal loan.
What is FNB’s Take-A-Break feature?
An automatic skip of the January instalment for qualifying personal loans (term over 6 months, repayments up to date). The loan term extends by one month, and customers can opt to keep paying instead.
Is FNB’s “temporary loan” the same as a Personal Loan?
No. FNB’s short-term facility, available to some customers directly in the FNB App for smaller, once-off borrowing, is a separate short-term credit facility from the standard Personal Loan, with its own eligibility rules and a shorter 1–6 month repayment window capped at up to 5% interest per month under the NCA.
