What is Postbank?
Postbank was established in 1910 as the Post Office's own savings bank, and for most of its history "Postbank" simply meant the savings counter at your local Post Office — the two were inseparable. At its peak, Postbank's grant-linked customer base numbered in the millions, though it has declined substantially in recent years as many beneficiaries moved their banking to private banks — figures reported in 2026 show Postbank's SASSA-linked customer base fell from around 8.2 million in June 2020 to around 2 million by June 2025. On 27 September 2023, Postbank was formally established as its own company, Postbank SOC Limited, separate from the loss-making South African Post Office (SAPO); the Postbank Amendment Act came into full effect in March 2024, transferring Postbank's shareholding from SAPO to the South African government directly and paving the way for Postbank to apply for its own SARB banking licence.
The separation became final on 1 May 2026, when the service agreement between SAPO and Postbank lapsed and Postbank-related transactions stopped being available at any Post Office counter. Postbank customers now do their cash banking through Standard Bank ATMs and branches and participating retailers instead — see the Branches & Where to Bank page for the current channels.
Postbank is not yet a full commercial bank in the sense that Capitec, FNB, Absa, Standard Bank or Nedbank are. In March 2026 it obtained a Financial Services Provider (FSP) licence from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), which lets it give financial advice and offer intermediary services under a regulated framework. It has not yet been granted a full banking licence from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) via the Prudential Authority — that remains the next major regulatory milestone in its five-year "stabilise, build, differentiate" transformation strategy.

What products does Postbank offer?
Savings accounts
Smart Save is Postbank's everyday savings account: R50 to open, no minimum balance, no monthly fee, and tiered interest up to 4.10% on balances above R25,000. Bakgotsi is a book-based group/stokvel account requiring a constitution and three authorised signatories, with two required for any withdrawal. Term Save and Term Save Plus are fixed-term deposits for lump sums: Term Save runs 1–12 months from a R1,000 minimum with tiered rates up to roughly 6.25% depending on term and amount, while Term Save Plus locks funds for a fixed 24 months at a higher rate, auto-renewing unless redeemed.
Transactional (debit card) accounts
Mzansi is Postbank's basic entry-level transactional account for South African citizens only, capped at a R25,000 balance and R5,000 in daily withdrawals. Flexi is the general-purpose transactional account (R40 minimum opening deposit and balance) with a Visa/Mastercard-branded debit card usable nationwide. Aspire is aimed at 16–24-year-olds, with the same R40 minimum and card-based access. All three carry a monthly service fee (Mzansi and Aspire are cheaper than Flexi) and the same Standard Bank/retailer-based cash deposit and cardless withdrawal pricing.
SASSA card
Postbank administers the debit card linked to SASSA social grant payments, restricted to grant and social security disbursements. If you're on the old SASSA Gold Card, it stops working after 31 August 2026 — collect a free replacement Postbank Black Card before then; see the News page for the full switch process.
Who is Postbank best suited for?
Postbank suits South Africans who want a low-cost, no-frills savings account without minimum-balance penalties, and grant beneficiaries who are issued a SASSA card by default. It's a reasonable option for stokvels and community savings groups thanks to the purpose-built Bakgotsi account, and for anyone prioritising simple fixed-term savings over investment features. It's a weaker fit for anyone who wants credit products (Postbank does not currently offer loans, overdrafts or credit cards to retail customers), or who relies on being able to walk into a Post Office branch — that in-person Post Office option ended on 1 May 2026, so day-to-day cash banking is now via Standard Bank and participating retailers instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is Postbank still part of the Post Office?
No. Postbank became a separate, wholly state-owned company on 27 September 2023, and since 1 May 2026 its transactions are no longer handled at Post Office counters at all.
Does Postbank have a full banking licence?
Not yet. It holds an FSP licence from the FSCA (granted March 2026), which allows financial advice and intermediary services, but a full commercial banking licence from the SARB is still pending.
Where do I deposit or withdraw cash now?
Through Standard Bank ATMs and branches, or participating retailers using a cardless solution. Post Office branches no longer offer Postbank services.
What happens to SASSA Gold Cards?
They stop working after 31 August 2026. Beneficiaries must collect a free Postbank Black Card before that date to keep receiving grant payments without interruption.
Does Postbank offer loans or credit cards?
No. Postbank's current retail range is savings and debit-card transactional accounts only — no personal loans, overdrafts or credit cards.
Is postbanksouthafrica.com the real Postbank?
No. Postbank's only official website is postbank.co.za. Other domains claiming to be Postbank — including ones advertising business loans or lending products Postbank doesn't offer — should be treated with caution.
