Smart Save

Smart Save is Postbank's everyday savings account, opened with a minimum R50 deposit and no minimum balance requirement afterwards. There's no monthly service fee and no account dormancy fee. Interest is tiered and paid monthly on the closing daily balance:

Balance in RandInterest rate (% p.a.)
R0 – R503.65%
R50.01 – R5,0003.70%
R5,000.01 – R15,0003.85%
R15,000.01 – R25,0003.95%
R25,000.01 and above4.10%

Enter a balance to see which interest tier it falls into and estimate what you'd earn, based on Postbank's own published rate card and worked examples.

Tier: R5,000.01 – R15,000 → 3.85% p.a.
R577.50

R48.13
Estimated interest per month
R1.58
Estimated interest per day

Estimate only, based on the balance staying constant for a full year at the listed tier rate — Postbank actually pays interest monthly on your daily closing balance, so your real payout will vary as your balance changes. Rate tiers as published on postbank.co.za; always confirm the current rate before relying on this for a financial decision.

Other Smart Save fees: R21.40 for a back-office close-out EFT, R77.00 to repay funds from unclaimed balances, R22.00 for a full statement up to 3 months old (R45.00 beyond that), while mini statements and balance enquiries are free. It can be opened as a joint account, and can be linked to a Postbank card account for transfers. Smart Save is one of Postbank's most-held products, with over 1.4 million account holders.

Smart Save for Minors

A version of Smart Save opened on behalf of a child under 16, with a lower R10 minimum to open. It works the same way as standard Smart Save — no monthly fee, transactions recorded in a savings book — and is typically opened and managed by a parent or guardian until the minor comes of age. Confirm current interest tiers with Postbank, as these are not always published at the same level of detail as the standard Smart Save rate card.

Bonus Save

Bonus Save rewards disciplined, longer-term saving: you open the account with a minimum R30 monthly commitment, choose a fixed term between 12 and 60 months, and make that same amount as a monthly stop-order payment from your Postbank card account for the full term. Rates are tiered by term length — for example, a 24-month term earns 2.20% interest, while a 60-month term earns 3.25%. Complete the full term with all payments made on time and you can qualify for an extra 0.50% bonus interest on top, taking a 24-month term to 2.70% or a 60-month term to 3.75% effective. Terminate early and you lose the bonus and pay a penalty, so only commit an amount you're confident you can maintain every month for the full term.

Bakgotsi (stokvel/group account)

Bakgotsi is a book-based savings account built for stokvels, clubs and societies, opened with a minimum R50 deposit and no minimum or maximum balance. It requires three authorised signatories on the account, and two signatories must be present for any withdrawal — a deliberate control that makes it harder for a single person to draw down group funds. To open one, the group needs a written constitution or declaration of goals, along with ID documents and proof of address for all authorised signatories, to satisfy FICA. There's no monthly management fee, and unlimited online withdrawals are available wherever Postbank cash services are offered.

Term Save & Term Save Plus

Term Save is a fixed-term deposit for a lump sum you don't need immediately: R1,000 minimum, no maximum, terms from 1 to 12 months, with interest calculated on a simple-interest basis on the capital amount and credited monthly or at maturity. Withdrawing before the term ends attracts a 1.00% penalty deducted from the interest earned. Postbank splits every term into two tiers — up to R10,000, and above R10,000 — with the larger tier consistently paying more:

TermUp to R10,000Above R10,000

3 months4.95%5.85%
4 months5.05%5.95%

6 months5.75%6.15%
7 – 12 months6.10%6.25%

Ask Postbank for a current maturity illustration for your deposit amount and chosen term. This guide does not contain an interactive deposit calculator, and older rate tables may have changed.

R10,456.75
Estimated maturity value
R4.57
Interest lost if redeemed early (1.00%)

Estimate only, using simple interest on the original capital for the exact number of months selected — since a "1–2 months" or "7–12 months" band covers a range, pick the specific month count closest to your actual term for the most accurate estimate. Rates as published on postbank.co.za, effective 29 May 2026; always confirm the current rate before committing funds.

Term Save Plus is the longer-horizon version: a fixed 24-month term, with two payout structures to choose from. Take interest every 6 months and you earn 6.00% (up to R10,000) or 6.25% (above R10,000); leave it to pay out at the full 24-month maturity instead and the rate rises slightly to 6.15% (up to R10,000) or 6.40% (above R10,000). Early redemption carries a 1.05% penalty on the interest earned, marginally higher than standard Term Save's 1.00%. Both products need a linked Postbank Smart Save or card account for interest and redemption payments.

All three card accounts (Mzansi, Flexi, Aspire) share the same cash deposit and cardless-withdrawal pricing: R15.00 plus R2.50 per R100 at Standard Bank ATMs (deposits) and at ABSA/Standard Bank ATMs and participating supermarket retail stores (cardless withdrawals). A back-office close-out EFT costs R21.40, repayment of unclaimed funds is R77.00, full statements are R22.00 (up to 3 months) or R45.00 (older), and mini statements/balance enquiries are free. Account dormancy fees apply to Mzansi, Flexi and Aspire (R32.00) but not Smart Save. None of the three currently pays meaningful credit interest on everyday balances.

The SASSA card is restricted to social grant and social security payments as directed by SASSA, and carries its own separate fee schedule rather than the standard card-account pricing above:

TransactionFee
Purchases and cash back at retail merchants3 free per month, then R3.50 per transaction
Replacement card1st replacement per year is free, then R26.00
Full statement (up to 3 months)1st per month is free, then R20.00 per statement

Postbank's own published SASSA fee schedule is dated 2024 and still describes some of these being handled "at SA Post Office branches" — a channel that, as covered above, is no longer available as of 1 May 2026. The fee amounts themselves are likely still current, but confirm with Postbank Customer Care which channel now applies for statements, balance enquiries and PIN resets. See the News page for the SASSA Gold-to-Black card switch that's underway now.

Is my money protected?

Postbank is a state-owned institution and an authorised Financial Services Provider (FSP No. 53760) regulated by the FSCA. It does not yet hold a full commercial banking licence from the SARB, so it does not currently fall under the same deposit-insurance scheme (CODI) that applies to fully licensed commercial banks. If deposit protection is a deciding factor for you, confirm Postbank's current regulatory status directly with the bank before committing large sums.

How to open a Postbank account

Postbank account opening is no longer handled at Post Office counters — since 1 May 2026, that service moved off SAPO premises entirely. Confirm the current application channel (Postbank's own service points, participating retailers, or an online/app process) directly with Postbank Customer Care on 0800 53 54 55 before applying, since this is an area still settling after the SAPO split. Whatever the channel, expect to need a South African ID document and, for most accounts, proof of residential address to satisfy FICA; Bakgotsi additionally requires a group constitution and the ID/address documents of all authorised signatories. Postbank's Chief Commercial Officer has said the bank plans to introduce digital, mobile-based account opening "in the short run" as part of its post-FSP-licence expansion — worth checking for by the time you read this, as it would remove the need to visit a physical location at all.

Does Postbank charge monthly fees?

Smart Save, Bakgotsi and Aspire have no monthly service fee. Mzansi charges R4.50/month and Flexi charges R14.00/month.

How much can I withdraw from a Mzansi account?

Up to R5,000 per day, with a maximum account balance of R25,000 at any time.

Where do I deposit cash into a Postbank account?

At Standard Bank ATMs and branches, or via cardless withdrawal at ABSA/Standard Bank ATMs and participating retail stores — Post Office branches no longer offer this service.

How much does a SASSA card ATM withdrawal cost?

Yes — Smart Save for Minors, opened with a minimum of R10, works the same way as standard Smart Save and is typically managed by a parent or guardian.
