Postbank Branches: Where to Deposit, Withdraw & Collect Cards Now

What changed, and when
For most of Postbank's history, "finding a branch" simply meant finding a Post Office — every Post Office was a Postbank counter, and there were around 2,000 of them across the country. That relationship formally ended on 1 May 2026, when the service level agreement between the South African Post Office (SAPO) and Postbank lapsed and Postbank declined to renew it. SAPO has since told customers not to visit Post Office branches for Postbank banking services, since staff there are no longer able to assist with those transactions.
This is the final step in a longer separation: Postbank became its own standalone state-owned company, Postbank SOC Limited, on 27 September 2023, and the migration of SASSA grant payments away from Post Office branches was already completed back in March 2023. The May 2026 change closes out the last piece — ordinary Postbank savings and card-account customers.
Where to deposit and withdraw cash now
| Transaction | Where to do it | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cash deposit | Standard Bank branches and ATMs | R15.00 + R2.50 per R100 deposited |
| Cash withdrawal (cardless) | Standard Bank and ABSA ATMs, and participating retailers including Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, Pick n Pay and Usave | R15.00 + R2.50 per R100 withdrawn |
| Balance enquiries & mini statements | Postbank app/contact channels, or at ATMs | Free |
| SASSA grant collection | Retailers and ATMs, as before — unaffected by the SAPO change | Per SASSA card fee schedule |
Cash transaction fees and any transaction limits are set by Standard Bank and the participating retailers themselves as much as by Postbank, so confirm the exact charge at the point of transaction. This arrangement is new as of May 2026 and worth re-checking directly with Postbank Customer Care (0800 53 54 55) if you're planning a large transaction.
Collecting a SASSA Black Card
If you're still on the old SASSA Gold Card, Postbank is running collection sites — including at Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, Pick n Pay and Usave stores, plus dedicated mobile/roving sites in underserved areas — where you can swap it for a free Postbank Black Card. Sites generally operate Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00. To find your nearest active site, dial *120*355# from your mobile phone and follow the prompts. Bring a valid South African ID or temporary ID; no application forms are needed, and any existing balance transfers automatically onto the new card. As of late August 2026, Postbank reports that over 1.5 million beneficiaries have already made the switch. See the News page for the full deadline and process.
Separately, if you need to withdraw cash without any card at all, participating retailers can process a SASSA/Postbank cardless withdrawal at the till: bring your ID and the cellphone number registered with SASSA, and staff will trigger a one-time PIN (OTP) or USSD prompt on your phone to confirm the payout before handing over cash.
Checking your SASSA/Postbank card balance
You don't need to visit a branch or queue at an ATM just to check your balance. Postbank offers a free SMS balance service: text BAL followed by the last four digits of your Postbank account number (not your card number) to 32302, and you'll receive your balance by return SMS. There's also a USSD option that works on any phone without data — dial *120*69# and follow the prompts to check your Black Card balance.
At an ATM, insert your card, enter your PIN, and select Balance Enquiry or Mini Statement. The first mini-statement each month is typically free; additional ones may carry a small charge (around R2.50). Whichever method you use, never share your PIN, ID number or card number with anyone claiming to help you check your balance — Postbank will never ask for these details over the phone or via SMS.
Common Postbank/SASSA card problems and how to fix them
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Card was swallowed by an ATM | Postbank Black Cards are interoperable and work at any bank's ATM — a swallowed card is usually a machine or usage issue rather than a card fault. Call 0800 53 54 55 to report it and arrange a replacement if needed. |
| Gold Card stopped working / expired | Visit any Postbank service point with your South African ID to collect a free Black Card — see the collection section above for how to find one. |
| Forgot your PIN | PIN resets can be done in person at a SASSA office or a Postbank service point with your South African ID. |
| SASSA confirms a grant was paid but it's not showing in your account | Wait until the next business day, then call Postbank Customer Care on 0800 53 54 55 if it still hasn't reflected. |
| Card lost or stolen | Block it immediately by calling 0800 53 54 55. If it was stolen, also open a case at your nearest SAPS station and keep the case number. |
Worth knowing: the 31 August 2026 deadline is not the first one set for this switch — earlier target dates in 2025 were extended more than once while Postbank scaled up its replacement sites and worked through a large backlog of beneficiaries. Postbank has said this final deadline will not be extended again, and with over 1.5 million beneficiaries already switched, the infrastructure to support the remaining beneficiaries is considerably further along than at the time of the earlier deadlines.
Getting other in-person or remote help
For anything that isn't a cash deposit, withdrawal or card collection — account queries, FICA updates, complaints, fraud reports — Postbank's phone lines (0800 53 54 55 / 0800 53 33 50), email addresses and the Postbank Contact Centre are the main channels now that Post Office counters are out of the picture. See the full Helpline page for every number and email address.

At Standard Bank branches and ATMs, for a fee of R15.00 plus R2.50 per R100 deposited.

Why did an ATM swallow my Postbank Black Card?
Postbank Black Cards work at any bank's ATM, so a swallowed card is usually a machine or usage issue rather than a card fault. Call Postbank Customer Care on 0800 53 54 55 to report it.
