Ithala Bank Business & SMME Finance: Not Currently Open to New Applicants
Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-20. This is not a new fact-check date.
Ithala’s FSP licence has been suspended since 2024, prohibiting it from concluding new business — including new business accounts, business loans, and Operation Vula funding applications. This page describes what Ithala has historically offered. See the News & Updates page for the full regulatory background.
Business accounts
| Account | Who it’s for | Access channels |
|---|---|---|
| Business Transactional Account | Registered entities needing day-to-day transacting | ATM, POS, branch network, internet and mobile banking |
| Business Saving Accounts | Registered entities building reserves or investing surplus funds | Fixed Deposit and related savings products, mirroring the individual range |
| Stokvel Bank Account | Registered stokvels and savings clubs | Branch-based account management |
The Business Transactional Account lets registered entities perform debit and credit transactions on available balances, with access to cash through ATM, POS, branch, internet and mobile channels. As with individual accounts, Ithala doesn’t publish a full fee schedule online — confirm current business account fees and documentation requirements with a branch consultant.
Business finance and loan documentation
For structured business finance, Ithala typically asks applicants for the latest management accounts (income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement with notes), a debtors and creditors age analysis as at the management account date, and — where equipment finance is involved — a list of the equipment to be financed with at least two quotations. Ithala takes security over the transaction being financed as part of these arrangements.
SMME mentorship and Operation Vula
Beyond transactional banking, Ithala runs dedicated small business and SMME development support, including business mentorship. Its Operation Vula programme targets Black-owned businesses operating in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and tourism, based in KwaZulu-Natal, with the aim of helping qualifying SMMEs access structured funding and support. Ithala also offers commercial property leasing as part of its broader business services.
Who should consider Ithala for business banking?
Ithala’s business offering suits KwaZulu-Natal-based registered businesses, stokvels and SMMEs — particularly Black-owned enterprises in agriculture, manufacturing or tourism that may benefit from Operation Vula funding, and any small business that values in-person mentorship alongside transactional banking. It’s a weaker fit for businesses operating mainly outside KwaZulu-Natal or those wanting a fully digital, app-first business banking experience.
