Discovery Bank App: Download, Login & Security Features
Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-17. This is not a new fact-check date.
Downloading the app
The Discovery Bank app is available for free on the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play Store (Android). Search "Discovery Bank" in either store — make sure you're downloading the banking app and not the separate general Discovery app, which covers Discovery Health, Vitality and other Discovery products rather than banking specifically. If you're opening a new account, the in-app "Join the Bank" flow handles registration; if you're already a client, you'll register your device the first time you log in on it.
How login and Facial ID work
Discovery Bank doesn't use a conventional typed username-and-password login as your everyday sign-in method. When you join, you set up a Facial ID — a biometric scan used to authenticate you every time you open the app, backed by multifactor authentication that can also call on a One-Time PIN as a backup while you're transacting. If you install the app on a new or secondary device, Discovery Bank runs additional identity checks and sends the One-Time PIN only to your primary registered device — so even someone who has your phone and login details still can't link a new device or get into your account without also having access to your original phone.
Discovery Bank has also added a fraud-prevention feature that blocks certain in-app payment authorisations while you're on an active phone call, specifically to counter scams where fraudsters keep a victim talking while walking them through approving a fraudulent transaction. Everyday transactions that don't need authorisation still work as normal during a call — only the authorisation step itself is paused.
Because your Discovery Bank login, Discovery Health app and Discovery Insure app all sit under one Discovery digital identity, you can move between those apps without logging in separately to each one.
Security Code and Panic Code
Separately from your Facial ID login, Discovery Bank lets you set up a Security Code and a Panic Code inside the app's Digital Account Vault — both 4 to 6 digits, and they can't be the same as each other. The Security Code lets you hide and unhide specific accounts in the app for extra privacy. The Panic Code is different: entering it signals that you may be transacting under duress, and Discovery Bank will treat it as a genuine emergency, including sharing your details with external parties (such as armed response) who can help. Because of that, entering the panic code by mistake repeatedly can incur a R2,000 fee, so only use it if you actually intend to.
If you forget either code, you can't retrieve the old one — Discovery Bank designs it so the codes aren't visible anywhere in the app, even to you, precisely so nobody who gets into your phone can see them either. Instead, go to Account security under More in the app and follow the "Forgot code" steps to set a new one.
What you can do in the app
- Manage all your accounts, cards and rewards in one place, including changing a card PIN or pausing/stopping a card instantly
- Download certified bank statements, account confirmation letters and tax certificates on demand
- Apply for new products — personal loans, home loans, credit cards, savings accounts — without visiting a branch
- Get real-time smart notifications for account activity, and TRUST alerts that flag the risk level of individual payments
- Access Discovery AI for automated queries, or Live Assist to share your screen and get real-time help from a Discovery Banker directly inside the app
Common login issues and what to do
- App won't recognise your face. Make sure you're in good lighting and holding the phone at eye level. If it keeps failing, you may need to redo your Facial ID setup — check under Account security in the app.
- New phone or reinstalled app. You'll go through additional identity checks to re-link your device, and Discovery Bank sends the One-Time PIN needed to complete this only to your primary registered device — so keep your original phone accessible until the new device is linked. This is expected and is a security feature, not an error.
- Forgotten Security Code or Panic Code. Go to More → Account security → Forgot code, and follow the prompts to set a new one. You can't recover the old code.
- App is slow, crashing, or missing a feature. Make sure you're on the latest version from the App Store or Google Play — older versions can behave unexpectedly. If it persists, contact Discovery Bank support rather than a third-party guide, since account-specific issues need identity verification.
- Still stuck? Call 0800 07 96 97 (general banking, 24/7) or use Discovery AI on WhatsApp — see the Helpline page for the full contact list.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Discovery Bank app free?
Yes, it's free to download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
How do I log in to Discovery Bank if I forgot my password?
Discovery Bank doesn't use a typed password as the everyday login method — it's built around Facial ID. If you're locked out, the fix is usually a device re-verification (live selfie check) rather than a password reset; for account-specific issues, contact Discovery Bank support directly rather than following generic password-reset guides not written for Discovery Bank specifically.
What's the difference between my Facial ID, my Security Code and my Panic Code?
Facial ID is how you log in to the app day to day. The Security Code and Panic Code are separate, optional 4–6 digit codes: the Security Code hides specific accounts, and the Panic Code discreetly signals you're in danger.
Can I bank with Discovery Bank from a desktop computer?
Day-to-day banking is designed around the mobile app rather than a desktop banking site — the app is the primary interface for managing your accounts, cards and rewards.
What happens if I enter my Panic Code by mistake?
Discovery Bank treats it as a genuine emergency signal, which can trigger real-world responses like armed response being dispatched. Repeatedly triggering it by mistake can result in a R2,000 fee.
Why can't I authorise a payment while I'm on a phone call?
Discovery Bank blocks certain in-app payment authorisations while you're on an active call, specifically to stop scams where a fraudster keeps you talking while guiding you through approving a fraudulent transaction. Regular transactions that don't need authorisation still work normally during a call.

Discovery Bank Branches & ATMs: Why There Are None, and How to Deposit Cash
Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-17. This is not a new fact-check date.
Why Discovery Bank has no branches or ATMs
Discovery Bank was built from the ground up as a digital-only bank — account opening, servicing, support and day-to-day transacting all happen in the Discovery Bank app rather than at a counter. This is a deliberate part of the bank's model, not a temporary gap: there's no branch network being rolled out, and no plan to install Discovery-branded ATMs. If you're looking for a "Discovery Bank branch near me" or a "Discovery Bank ATM," you won't find one — the closest equivalent is opening the app or calling the phone banking line.
How to withdraw cash
You can withdraw cash from your Discovery Bank transaction account at any Visa-accepting ATM in South Africa — simply select the current or cheque account option on the machine. You can also withdraw cash at the till when you make a purchase at participating local retailers, including Checkers, Pick n Pay, Shoprite and select Spar stores. This point-of-sale cash withdrawal costs a flat R2 on pay-as-you-transact fee plans, and is free on bundled fee plans.
How to deposit cash
To deposit cash, go to any till at Boxer, Checkers, Pick n Pay or Shoprite with your physical Discovery Bank card and tell the cashier you want to deposit cash into your account — be specific that it's a deposit, not a payment. You'll insert your card into the pay point machine, enter your PIN, and hand over the cash; the cashier gives you a slip confirming the transaction.
| Where | What you need |
|---|---|
| Boxer, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Shoprite tills | Your physical Discovery Bank card and PIN |
| Any Visa-accepting ATM (withdrawals only) | Your Discovery Bank card, selecting the current/cheque account option |
Deposit costs and any per-transaction limits can differ between retailers, so check with the specific store for current pricing before a large deposit. Cash deposits made this way reflect in your Discovery Bank account, though availability can take a little longer than an ATM deposit at a traditional bank — always confirm your balance in the app rather than assuming instant availability.
What replaces the branch: the app and phone banking
- Open a new account, transaction account, savings account, credit card or loan entirely in the Discovery Bank app
- Phone banking on 0800 07 96 97, 24/7, for general queries
- Fraud reporting or a lost/stolen card on 011 324 4444, also 24/7
- Discovery AI on WhatsApp (+27 11 324 4844) for account queries after in-app authentication
- Document requests, settlement letters and statements, all downloadable from within the app
Frequently asked questions
Does Discovery Bank have any branches in South Africa?
No. Discovery Bank is fully digital and has never operated physical branches.
Where's my nearest Discovery Bank ATM?
There isn't one — Discovery Bank doesn't operate its own ATM network. You can withdraw cash at any Visa-accepting ATM instead.
How do I deposit cash into a Discovery Bank account?
At the till of any Boxer, Checkers, Pick n Pay or Shoprite store, using your physical Discovery Bank card and PIN — tell the cashier it's a deposit.
Does it cost anything to withdraw cash at a retailer till?
A flat R2 per withdrawal on pay-as-you-transact plans; free on bundled fee plans.
Can I speak to someone in person about my account?
Not at a branch, but you can call 0800 07 96 97 for general banking, 24/7, or use Discovery AI on WhatsApp for account queries.
How to Close a Discovery Bank Account (Step by Step
Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-17. This is not a new fact-check date.
Before you call: what to sort out first
- Withdraw or transfer any remaining balance out of the account — this speeds up closure and avoids any confusion afterward
- Settle any outstanding credit card or loan balance in full, if you're closing a credit product, not just a transaction or savings account
- Redirect your salary deposit and any recurring income to your new account before you close, not after
- Move or cancel debit orders linked to the account — Discovery Bank's debit order dispute system notifies the collecting company through banking channels, but you should still contact each service provider directly to update your new account details
- Download any statements, tax certificates or documents you might need later, since you may lose easy access to them once the account is closed
How to close your account, step by step
- Settle up first. Make sure the account has no outstanding balance owed to Discovery Bank, and withdraw any remaining positive balance.
- Call 0800 07 96 97. This is Discovery Bank's general banking line, available 24/7. Tell the consultant you want to close your account and which account(s) you're referring to if you hold more than one.
- Confirm your identity. Expect to verify who you are — have your ID number and account details ready.
- Request written confirmation. Ask for confirmation once the closure is processed, ideally in writing or via email, so you have a record that the account was actually closed rather than just paused.
- Wait for processing. Discovery Bank's own account terms state the bank will close the account "within a reasonable time" from when it receives your instruction — this isn't necessarily instant.
Cancelling just a card, without closing the account
If you only want to cancel a specific card — not close the whole account — you can do this directly in the app: open the Discovery Bank app, go to your Dashboard, tap Cards, find the card you want to stop, tap Cancel card, and confirm. This is different from closing the underlying account, and it's useful if you've lost a card or simply want to stop using one card without shutting down your banking relationship with Discovery entirely.
What to watch out for
- Closing an account suspends any linked debit orders — after seven consecutive unpaid or failed debit order attempts, the debit order itself gets suspended by the system, so don't rely on account closure alone to stop a recurring payment cleanly; cancel the arrangement with the service provider directly too
- If you're closing a credit card account with an outstanding balance, expect to be asked to settle that balance (or an agreed settlement figure) before the closure completes — this is standard for any credit account, not unique to Discovery Bank
- Closure isn't available as a simple in-app self-service toggle — it currently requires a phone call, so budget time for that call rather than expecting an instant online process
- If you're switching banks, open and fully activate your new account (salary deposit redirected, debit orders moved) before you request closure of your Discovery Bank account, to avoid a gap in your banking access
Frequently asked questions
Can I close my Discovery Bank account in the app?
No — full account closure requires calling 0800 07 96 97. The app lets you cancel individual cards, but not close the underlying account.
How long does it take to close a Discovery Bank account?
Discovery Bank's own terms state it will close the account "within a reasonable time" of receiving your request — this isn't a fixed number of days, so ask the consultant for an expected timeframe when you call.
Do I need to pay anything to close my account?
You need to settle any outstanding balance owed on credit products first. There's no separate closure fee stated in Discovery Bank's public account terms, but always confirm this for your specific account when you call.
What happens to my debit orders when I close the account?
They get suspended — either immediately on closure or after seven consecutive failed attempts. You should still contact each service provider directly to move the debit order to your new account, rather than assuming the bank's system will handle that for you.
Can I reopen a closed Discovery Bank account later?
This isn't addressed in Discovery Bank's public materials — contact the bank directly on 0800 07 96 97 to ask about your specific situation before assuming either way.
Is Discovery Bank Safe? Security, Licensing & Fraud Protection Explained
Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-17. This is not a new fact-check date.
Is Discovery Bank a real, licensed bank?
Yes. Discovery Bank Limited is registered in South Africa under company registration number 2015/408745/06, holds a banking licence from the South African Reserve Bank, and operates as an authorised financial services provider (FSP 48657) and registered credit provider (NCRCP9997). It is a subsidiary of Discovery Limited, a JSE-listed financial services group with operations across insurance, healthcare and banking.
Regulatory snapshot
Is my money protected if Discovery Bank fails?
Yes, up to a point. As a SARB-licensed bank, Discovery Bank's qualifying deposits — including balances in transaction, savings and forex accounts — are automatically covered under the Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI), up to R100,000 per depositor, in the event the bank fails and is liquidated. This cover is automatic and doesn't require you to apply or register. It's worth knowing what CODI does not cover: it protects money you have on deposit, not money you owe. Overdrawn transaction account balances and outstanding credit card or loan balances aren't covered, since those are debts to the bank rather than deposits with it.
Is Discovery Bank financially stable?
Discovery Bank reported breaking even in the second half of its fiscal year ended 30 June 2025 — a year ahead of its own internal target — narrowing its full-year loss to R68 million, down sharply from R454 million the year before. Its parent, Discovery Limited, is a well-established, JSE-listed group with revenue of R37.03 billion and net income of R9.55 billion in its 2025 financial year. Discovery Bank's own profitability trajectory has been improving each year since its 2019 public launch, and its regulatory status and CODI protection apply regardless of whether the bank is currently profitable.
What security features protect your account?
- Biometric authentication (fingerprint and facial recognition) alongside two-factor authentication for logins and transactions
- Behavioural fraud monitoring that analyses your normal banking patterns — login habits, typical payment types — and flags transactions that don't fit that pattern in real time
- A dedicated Fraud alerts channel inside the app's Notifications section, with ongoing updates on current scam trends
- A digital account vault and a panic code function, designed to protect clients who may be transacting under duress or physical coercion
- In-app payment authorisations are blocked while you're on an active phone call, to counter scams where a fraudster keeps you talking while guiding you through approving a fraudulent payment
- Extra identity checks and a One-Time PIN sent only to your primary registered device whenever you install the app on a new or secondary device
- A dedicated 24/7 fraud line (011 324 4444) separate from general banking support
Scams to watch for — even on a secure bank
Discovery Bank has publicly warned that most banking fraud in South Africa today is less about criminals breaking into banking systems and more about manipulating clients into approving fraudulent transactions themselves — a pattern known as social engineering. Common tactics the bank has flagged include:
- Fraudsters posing as bank staff, asking you to download remote-access apps that hand them control of your phone or laptop
- Fake "too good to be true" online shopping deals, especially around holiday shopping seasons
- Fraudulent payment authorisation requests — always read the merchant name and currency carefully before approving any transaction prompt
- Card cloning and skimming at ATMs, where criminals watch for your PIN before stealing your card or device
Practical steps Discovery Bank recommends: never click links to online shopping sites (type the URL manually instead), only pay through a merchant's own payment gateway, never authorise a transaction you didn't initiate yourself, enable app notifications so you see money leaving your account instantly, and keep your EFT and ATM limits set low in the app if you don't need them higher.
What to do if you suspect fraud
- Call the dedicated fraud line, 011 324 4444, immediately — it runs 24/7, separate from general banking support
- If your device is lost or stolen, notify Discovery Bank first, before anything else
- Log out of the banking app after every session and avoid staying permanently logged in on shared or unfamiliar devices
- If you believe you were pressured or coerced into a transaction, say so clearly when reporting it — this affects how the case is investigated
Frequently asked questions
Is Discovery Bank a legitimate, licensed bank?
Yes. It holds a South African Reserve Bank banking licence and is an authorised financial services and registered credit provider.
Is my Discovery Bank deposit protected if the bank collapses?
Yes, up to R100,000 per depositor under CODI, automatically, on qualifying transaction, savings and forex account balances.
Does CODI cover my credit card debt or overdraft?
No. CODI protects money you have on deposit with the bank, not money you owe the bank.
What should I do if I think I've been scammed?
Call the Discovery Bank fraud line on 011 324 4444 immediately — it operates 24/7.
Is Discovery Bank financially healthy?
It reported breaking even a year ahead of schedule in its 2025 fiscal year, and its parent company, Discovery Limited, is a large, profitable, JSE-listed group.
