Account details
Transact Account — R7.50/month
Absa’s cheapest account, requiring only a valid South African ID or passport and proof of residence — no payslip or minimum income needed. It includes unlimited card swipes and till-point withdrawals, R5,000 lump-sum life cover for the first 12 months, free Absa Rewards enrolment, and CashSend transfers to any South African cellphone number. Absa cites this account as South Africa’s most affordable entry-level account for two consecutive years, per the Solidarity Bank Charges Report.
Gold Cheque Account — R150/month
A step up from Transact, recommended for customers earning around R4,000 a month or more. It bundles a Visa debit card supporting tap-and-pay for transactions up to R500 without a PIN, free access to the Absa Banking App and Online Banking, preferential Bidvest Premier Airport Lounge rates, free life cover in the first year, and access to an overdraft or linked credit card subject to approval. Customers who regularly exhaust their monthly Absa ATM withdrawal allowance can add the Gold Value Bundle Plus for an extra R80 a month, unlocking unlimited Absa ATM cash withdrawals.
Prosperity Account (55+)
Designed for South Africans aged 55 and older, with a discounted monthly fee, rebates for maintaining a minimum balance, Absa Rewards cashback, free life cover in the first year, and will-drafting assistance. Applicants must not be under debt counselling, intervention or curatorship.
Ultimate Banking — R98/month (Ultimate Plus: R220/month)
A transactional account for customers earning a minimum of R7,000 a month, bundling a Visa debit card, an optional credit card with no separate monthly fee, up to R100,000 free life insurance for the first 12 months, a free R2,000 Balance Booster facility, a linked Savings Booster earning repo-linked interest, and free Absa Rewards on both debit and credit card spend. The R98 monthly fee is waived entirely if you maintain a R25,000 balance. Ultimate Plus — Absa’s higher tier, broadly equivalent to Premium Banking — costs R220 a month and requires a minimum income of R25,000 a month; it adds R3 million in travel insurance (versus R1.5 million on base Ultimate Banking) and Bidvest Lounge access. Customers 55 and older who qualify are moved to an Ultimate Prosperity Account instead. A no-credit version of Ultimate Banking is also available with different fees and benefits.
Premium Banking
For R240 a month, Premium Banking includes the current account, no separate monthly credit card fee, and free Absa Rewards, plus access to a dedicated Financial Adviser, priority banking at selected branches, and a 50% discount on the account fee when a R50,000+ balance is maintained on the cheque account. The standard package includes R3,000/month in Absa ATM and POS cash withdrawals and R3,000/month in Absa ATM cash deposits; customers who need more can upgrade to Premium Banking Plus for unlimited Absa ATM cash withdrawals and five free ATM cash deposits a month, after which standard fees apply.
