Discovery Bank Vitality Money & Rewards: How Status and Ðiscovery Miles Wor

Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-17. This is not a new fact-check date.

Quick answer: Vitality Money is Discovery Bank's behavioural rewards engine. It scores six financial behaviours, converts your score into points, and your total points set your status — Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Diamond. That status is what actually moves your Dynamic Interest Rates, your borrowing discounts and your everyday cashback. Ðiscovery Miles are the separate rewards currency you earn along the way and can spend at Vitality Mall or partner merchants, redeem for airtime and electricity, or convert to cash at a fixed rate of 10 Miles to R1.

How your Vitality Money status is calculated

Vitality Money is automatically activated if you hold a Discovery Bank Transaction Account, Credit Card Account, or Suite — there's no separate application. It scores six controllable financial behaviours, each shown as a ring in the app: having enough savings, managing debt well, holding the right insurance products, planning for retirement, managing property responsibly, and completing financial education or planning activities. Each behaviour earns Vitality Money points based on how well you manage it, and your total points across all six determine your status.

You don't need a perfect score in every category — strong performance in most of the six behaviours can still be enough to reach Gold or Diamond. Status is recalculated regularly as your behaviours and points change, and if your Vitality Money membership lapses for 45 days or more, you restart at Blue with zero points.

Wealth points for larger balances

On top of the six behaviours, clients with R5 million or more in savings and investments — held with Discovery Bank, Discovery Invest, or other financial institutions — can earn substantial extra points toward their savings score based on the value of those assets. Separately, once you're on Gold status, maintaining a combined savings balance of R100,000 or more across your Discovery Bank accounts is enough on its own to reach Diamond. Purple Suite clients have a distinct fast-track: with Vitality Money activated and a savings balance of R250,000 or more, they qualify for Diamond status directly, without needing to first reach Gold.

The five status tiers

StatusWhat it generally unlocks
BlueEntry-level status when you join Vitality Money; base interest rates and rewards, no Dynamic Interest boost
BronzeSmall boosts to Dynamic Interest Rates and a modest personal loan rate discount (0.5%)
SilverFurther boosted savings and transaction account interest, personal loan discount rises to 1%
GoldMeaningful boosts across savings, transaction and borrowing rates, personal loan discount of 3%
DiamondMaximum Dynamic Interest Rates, the largest borrowing discount available (up to 5% on personal loans), and top-tier lifestyle and travel rewards

These effects vary by product — see the Credit Cards, Bank Accounts and Personal Loans pages for the specific rate ranges each status unlocks on each product.

Earning Ðiscovery Miles

Ðiscovery Miles is Discovery's separate rewards currency, distinct from your Vitality Money status and from cashback. You earn Miles through everyday spending, healthy living activity and specific banking behaviours:

  • Card spend: up to Ð1 for every R15 spent on qualifying Discovery Bank credit card purchases, based on your product and Vitality Money status, up to a monthly spend limit
  • Vitality Active Rewards: play a personalised weekly gameboard on "Rewards Wednesday" in the app, earning Miles for exercise, drive and spend goals — up to 750 Miles for revealing a Discovery tile in a single week
  • Discovery Miles+ Network: up to 15% back in Miles every day when shopping online or in-store at home, fashion and lifestyle partners with your Discovery Bank virtual card
  • Friend Referral Rewards: up to Ð5,000 for every friend who signs up with a qualifying Discovery Bank product; they earn up to Ð2,500 too
  • Discovery Life Bank Integrated premiums: up to 7.5% of your premium back in Miles each month when the debit order runs from a qualifying Discovery Bank account
  • HealthyFood, HealthyCare and HealthyBaby: up to 75% back on qualifying groceries, up to 50% back on selected care and baby items, for Vitality Health members meeting assessment requirements
  • Fuel: up to 20% back in Miles at bp and select Shell stations with Vitality Money engaged

Spending Ðiscovery Miles

Ðiscovery Miles convert at a fixed rate of 10 Miles to R1. You can spend them at over 45 online and in-store retail partners for up to 15% off everyday, or up to 30% off on "Miles Ð-Day" — the 15th of every month. Miles can also be redeemed in Vitality Mall for shopping, entertainment and lifestyle rewards, used to buy airtime and electricity directly in the Discovery Bank app, sent to other contacts, or exchanged for cash paid straight into your Discovery Bank account at the same 10:1 rate.

Rewards, cashback and discounts: what's the difference?

  • Vitality Money status — determines your Dynamic Interest Rates and borrowing discounts; it's the underlying score, not a currency you spend
  • Ðiscovery Miles — the rewards currency you earn from spending, healthy behaviour and referrals; spendable, redeemable or convertible to cash
  • Merchant cashback/discounts — product-specific offers like the DStv reward (up to 25% back in Miles on DStv payments) or fuel rewards, paid as Miles into your account rather than as an interest rate change

These three work together but aren't the same thing — a higher Vitality Money status generally increases how much you earn in Miles and cashback too, but improving your status is about your financial behaviour, while earning Miles is about your spending and engagement.
