What is African Bank, and is it safe to bank with?

African Bank Limited is a South African retail bank whose roots trace back to 1975, though the bank operating today was re-established after the original African Bank’s August 2014 collapse and curatorship. A rescue package led by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), together with the country’s major commercial banks and the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF), recapitalised the bank, which relaunched under a new banking licence in 2016. As a result, African Bank is majority state-linked: SARB holds 50% of the bank, GEPF holds 25%, and FirstRand, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, Investec and Capitec hold smaller minority stakes from the original rescue.

African Bank is licensed and regulated by the South African Reserve Bank, and is an authorised financial services provider and registered credit provider (NCR registration NCRCP7638). Qualifying deposits are protected up to R100,000 per depositor under South Africa’s Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI), the same industry-wide scheme that covers all SARB-licensed banks.

What products does African Bank offer?

MyWORLD Bank Account

MyWORLD is African Bank’s everyday transactional account, built around shared banking: the Primary Account Holder can link up to 5 free Pocket accounts — either Power Pockets (with their own embossed debit card, for sharing with family) or Savings Pockets (for group or goal-based saving). The account carries a monthly fee of R69, introduced in October 2023 after several years as a fee-free offering, as the bank moved toward a “solidarity pricing” model ahead of a planned public listing.

Savings, Fixed and Notice Deposits

Beyond the Savings Pocket, African Bank offers Fixed Deposits (a single deposit locked for 3 to 60 months), Notice Deposits (accessible with 7, 32 or 90 days’ notice), an Access Accumulator that pays increasing interest with anytime access, and a Tax-Free Investment for money invested for 12 months or more. See the Savings & Investments page for terms, minimums and current reported rates.

Personal Loans

Personal loans remain African Bank’s flagship product: amounts from R2,000 to R500,000 over repayment terms of 7 to 72 months, applied for online, by phone or in branch. The bank also offers a dedicated Consolidation Loan for combining existing debt into a single instalment, and The 12% Loan, a lower-rate option for R2,000 to R50,000 over 9 to 24 months.

Black Credit Card

African Bank’s Black Credit Card offers a credit limit of up to R500,000 (subject to affordability and credit assessment), up to 62 days interest-free on point-of-sale and online purchases when the balance is settled in full, and interest of up to 3% on a positive balance. Cards are personalised and embossed, collected in branch once approved.

Insurance and lifestyle products

African Bank requires Credit Life Insurance on loans and the credit card, covering events such as retrenchment, death, compulsory unpaid leave and temporary or permanent disability. The bank also offers a Funeral Plan, and Isiko, a product combining modern financial tools with traditional community savings and burial needs.

Free Credit Report

African Bank customers can also check their credit score and view their full credit report for free through the App or Online Banking, with the option to download it as a PDF or have it emailed — a quick way to check where you stand before applying for a loan or credit card.

Who is African Bank best suited for?

African Bank suits South Africans who want access to a personal loan or credit card with a real branch to visit for applications, card collection and support, rather than a purely digital process. It’s a strong fit for customers prioritising a large potential credit card limit, a wide range of loan terms, or shared family banking through MyWORLD’s Pocket accounts. It’s a weaker fit for customers chasing South Africa’s very lowest transactional account fees, since MyWORLD now carries a R69 monthly charge, or for those who want an entirely app-only banking relationship with no branch touchpoints.
