African Bank Personal Loans: Amounts, Terms & How to Apply

Quick answer: African Bank offers personal loans from R2,000 to R500,000, repayable over 7 to 72 months. Applications can be made online, over the phone or in branch, and approved funds are paid directly into the customer’s bank account. A dedicated Consolidation Loan and a lower-rate 12% Loan (R2,000–R50,000, 9–24 months) are also available for specific needs.

Eligibility requirements

To apply for an African Bank personal loan, applicants generally need to be over 18, provide their most recent proof of income, and supply a latest bank statement reflecting at least three months of salary deposits. Applicants must also confirm they are not currently under debt review and have not been declared bankrupt — African Bank’s application form requires this confirmation directly. Credit Life Insurance is required alongside the loan, covering events such as retrenchment, death, compulsory unpaid leave, lay-offs, short time, loss of income, and temporary or permanent disability, so that repayments are protected if the borrower can’t make them due to a covered event.

How to apply

Application steps

  1. Check what you could qualify for using African Bank’s online loan calculator or by requesting a quote.
  2. Apply online through the African Bank website or App, by phone, in person at any African Bank branch, or by SMSing “Loan” to 30963.
  3. Submit the required documents — proof of income and latest bank statement — for the credit assessment.
  4. If approved, the loan amount is paid directly into your bank account, with repayment dates set out on the first page of your loan agreement.

How repayments work

Repayment dates are fixed at the start of the loan agreement, and African Bank can arrange to deduct instalments from a linked bank account automatically, typically timed to the customer’s payday. Customers can also pay via EFT, debit order, EasyPay, Pay@ or in branch. Settlement quotes, paid-up letters and statements can all be requested through the App or Online Banking without needing to call in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum and maximum African Bank personal loan amount?

Loans range from R2,000 up to R500,000, with repayment terms from 7 to 72 months.

Can I apply for an African Bank loan if I’m blacklisted or under debt review?

African Bank’s own loan application requires you to confirm you are not under debt review and have not been declared bankrupt — so a formal debt review application won’t be approved. A negative credit listing (“blacklisted”) doesn’t automatically disqualify you, but it will factor into the credit assessment and may reduce your chances. Be wary of any site promising a “guaranteed blacklisted loan” — no registered South African bank can lawfully offer that.

Can I apply for an African Bank loan if I’m not an existing customer?

Yes. Applications are open online, by phone, or in branch, and don’t require an existing African Bank account, though approval depends on the credit assessment.

Is Credit Life Insurance compulsory on an African Bank loan?

Yes. It’s required to protect repayments against events like retrenchment, death, and temporary or permanent disability.

What’s the difference between the standard Personal Loan and The 12% Loan?

The 12% Loan is a smaller-value, lower-rate product capped at R50,000 over 9 to 24 months, while the standard Personal Loan covers R2,000 to R500,000 over up to 72 months.

How do I check the status of my loan application?

Call African Bank’s “Where is my loan” line on 0861 111 011, or check via the App or Online Banking.

Is African Bank’s personal loan really up to R500,000, or R350,000?

Can I apply for a loan by SMS?

Yes — SMS “Loan” to 30963, in addition to applying online, by phone, or in branch.
