Quick answer: MyWORLD is African Bank’s shared-banking transactional account, priced at R5 a month, with no minimum balance. The Primary Account Holder can link up to 5 free Power Pocket or Savings Pocket accounts. Savings Pockets pay tiered interest of up to 5.50% per year; MyWORLD and Power Pocket both pay 1.00%. MyWORLD

MyWORLD is African Bank’s primary transactional account. It carries a monthly service fee of R5 (VAT included), a change introduced from 1 October 2023 after several years as a fee-free account, as the bank shifted to what it called a “solidarity pricing” strategy as part of its FY24 Consumer Banking Strategy and Annual Pricing Review. The account has no minimum balance requirement and comes with a Visa debit card. The person who opens the account is the Primary Account Holder, and can link up to 5 additional free Pocket accounts — a mix of Power Pockets and Savings Pockets — to bank alongside family or friends.

How to open a MyWORLD account

Accounts can be opened online through African Bank’s Online Banking registration, via the African Bank App, or in person at any African Bank branch. African Bank markets the online process as achievable in under five minutes for a straightforward application.

Power Pocket

A Power Pocket is a separate account linked to the Primary MyWORLD account, with its own unique account number and its own embossed Visa debit card. It’s designed for sharing — for example, giving a child their own card while retaining oversight, or setting up an account for a family member who doesn’t have their own bank account. Up to 10 members can be added to view a Power Pocket, and one additional Pocket User can be added to transact on it using the linked card. Power Pocket pays the same 1.00% per year interest as the Primary MyWORLD Account.

Savings Pocket

A Savings Pocket is a separate account with its own account number, built for goal-based saving rather than everyday spending — no card can be linked to it, but funds remain immediately accessible. It’s suited to dream goals, group savings goals, grocery clubs, stokvels and emergency funds. Interest is tiered by balance and paid as a nominal annual rate compounded monthly (NACM):

BalanceInterest rate (NACM)
R0 – R24,9992.75%
R25,000 – R49,9993.75%
R50,000 – R99,9994.75%
R100,000 – R999,9995.25%
R1,000,000+5.50%

MyWORLD Overdraft

MyWORLD account holders can also apply for an overdraft facility, ranging from a minimum of R3,500 up to a maximum of R100,000 depending on affordability. There’s no initiation fee, but the Overdraft facility carries its own monthly fee of R69 (separate from and in addition to the R5 MyWORLD account fee), and transaction fees follow the standard MyWORLD pricing guide. Applications can be made through the App, Online Banking, by calling 0860 333 004, or in branch.

MyWORLD Elevate

MyWORLD Elevate is a variant aimed at people early in their career, priced at R40 per month. Alongside standard MyWORLD banking, it bundles access to a “Success Centre” offering career-development and financial-literacy resources, plus discounts or complimentary courses and coaching sessions.

Is my money protected?

African Bank is licensed by the South African Reserve Bank, and qualifying deposits are protected up to R100,000 per depositor under the Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI) — the same deposit insurance scheme that applies across all SARB-licensed banks in South Africa. African Bank publishes its own CODI information page confirming its participation in the scheme.

African Bank Savings & Investments: Fixed Deposits, Notice Deposits & Tax-Free Investment

Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-17. This is not a new fact-check date.

Quick answer: Beyond the everyday MyWORLD account, African Bank offers four dedicated savings and investment products: Fixed Deposits (lock in a rate for a set term), Notice Deposits (better rates, with a waiting period to withdraw), a Tax-Free Investment (no tax on growth, government-capped contributions), and the Access Accumulator (rising rates with ongoing access). African Bank’s website includes an investment calculator and a fixed deposit calculator to estimate returns for your specific amount and term. Rates are tiered by balance and change with market conditions — see the rate caveat below before relying on any specific number.
A note on the rates below: African Bank’s own downloadable rate sheet is dated December 2024 and appears outdated relative to independent SA rate-tracking sites reporting notably lower rates in mid-2026 — consistent with the broader interest rate cycle easing since then. The table below uses the more recently dated, independently corroborated figures, clearly marked, rather than the stale official PDF. Always confirm the exact current rate in the App, on the live product page, or at account opening before investing — these figures are indicative, not guaranteed.

Fixed Deposit

A Fixed Deposit locks a single lump-sum deposit away for a chosen term, from 3 to 60 months, at a rate that doesn’t change for the life of the term — useful if you want certainty and don’t need the money in the meantime. The longer the term and the larger the deposit, the better the rate tends to be.

TermReported rate range (nominal / effective)
12 monthsup to 7.26% / 7.51% (top tier, R250,000+)
60 monthsup to 8.47% / 8.81% (top tier, R1,000,000+)

Source: independent SA rate-tracking sites, reported May–July 2026. African Bank’s own downloadable rate sheet (dated December 2024) shows higher figures that are likely stale — see the caveat above.

Interest can typically be paid out monthly or at maturity, and early withdrawal is only allowed in exceptional circumstances, generally at a reduced rate — this product rewards leaving the money untouched for the full term.

Notice Deposit

A Notice Deposit pays a better rate than an instant-access savings account, in exchange for giving African Bank advance notice — 7, 32 or 90 days — before you can withdraw. The account has an indefinite term as long as a minimum balance of R500 is maintained, and additional deposits from R100 are allowed.

Notice periodReported rate range
7 daysup to 7.02%
32 daysup to 7.17%
90 daysup to 7.26%

Tax-Free Investment

African Bank’s Tax-Free Investment is a 12-month product where all interest earned is completely free of tax, within limits set by South African law. You can invest up to R46,000 per tax year (raised from R36,000 on 1 March 2026) and a lifetime maximum of R500,000 — these caps apply across every bank’s Tax-Free Investment or Tax-Free Savings Account, not just African Bank’s, so they can’t be exceeded by spreading money across multiple providers. The minimum opening deposit is R50, with additional deposits from R50 a month.

DetailInformation
Reported rate range6.98%–7.26%, depending on balance tier (independent rate trackers, May 2026)
Annual contribution limitR46,000 (national cap, set by SARS/National Treasury, effective 1 March 2026)
Lifetime contribution limitR500,000 (national cap)
Minimum to openR50
WithdrawalsAllowed on the account’s 12-month anniversary and every 12 months thereafter

Your rate is locked for the first 12 months; if African Bank’s rate rises before your anniversary, you benefit from the increase, but if it falls you keep your original locked-in rate for that period. On each anniversary, the rate resets to whatever is current at that time.

Access Accumulator

The Access Accumulator is a longer-term product (around 24 months on the last confirmed rate sheet) designed to pay an increasing rate the longer the money stays invested, while still allowing ongoing access — a middle ground between a Fixed Deposit’s better rate and a savings account’s flexibility.

No current rate confirmed. We could not find a source more recent than African Bank’s December 2024 rate sheet for this specific product, so we’re not publishing a number here. Check the live product page or ask in branch for the current rate before opening one.

Is there a bonus rate for customers 55 and older?

Some reporting suggests African Bank has historically offered an age-based rate boost — around 1 percentage point — for customers 55 and older on Fixed and Notice Deposits. We couldn’t confirm this on African Bank’s own current, live rate sheet, so treat it as something to ask about at account opening rather than a guaranteed benefit.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a Fixed Deposit and a Notice Deposit?

A Fixed Deposit locks your money away for a set term at a fixed rate. A Notice Deposit has no fixed end date, but you must give advance notice (7, 32 or 90 days) before withdrawing.

How much can I put into a Tax-Free Investment each year?

R46,000 per tax year (raised from R36,000 on 1 March 2026), with a R500,000 lifetime cap — this is a national limit that applies across all providers, not just African Bank.

Are these rates guaranteed to be current?

No. Interest rates on savings and investment products change with market conditions. The figures on this page are the most recently reported ones we could verify, not a live feed — always confirm the exact current rate before investing.

How do I open a Fixed Deposit, Notice Deposit or Tax-Free Investment?

All three can be opened online through African Bank’s website or App in a few minutes, or in branch.

Are these products covered by deposit insurance?

Yes — qualifying deposits are protected up to R100,000 per depositor under the Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI), the same scheme covering African Bank’s transactional accounts.
