Standard Bank Personal Loans: Amounts, Fees & Interest Rates

Rate disclosure: A rate expressed as prime plus a margin changes when prime changes. The 27.75% figure used in older coverage depended on a 10.25% prime rate; it is not a permanently valid legal maximum. Ask Standard Bank for a current quotation and confirm the applicable unsecured-credit limit with the National Credit Regulator.

This is illustrative only — actual repayments depend on your personalised interest rate.

Eligibility: what Standard Bank actually assesses

Standard Bank’s own FAQ confirms every application is assessed individually, based on three factors: your credit score (how you’ve handled debt and repayments in the past), your income (whether you earn enough to comfortably afford the repayments alongside your other expenses), and the National Credit Act’s regulatory limits on interest rates. Standard Bank doesn’t publish a minimum credit score for personal loans specifically, so treat any specific score figure you see elsewhere as unverified — but general credit and financing criteria published by the bank require you to be 18 or older (or an emancipated minor), earn a gross monthly salary of at least R3,500, and have a transactional account your salary is paid into.

Documents you’ll need, and how to apply

Standard Bank lets you apply for a Term Loan through the Banking App or Internet Banking, even if you don’t currently bank with them — you don’t need an existing Standard Bank account to start an application. Applying online also means you can see what you qualify for and your estimated repayments upfront, before committing. Typical documents you’ll be asked for include:

  • A valid South African ID or Smart ID card
  • Proof of residence not older than three months
  • Your most recent payslip
  • Your last three months’ bank statements (particularly if you don’t already bank with Standard Bank)

Standard Bank’s own guidance is that applying online or via the App gets you a faster decision than an in-branch application, since the digital route can assess your affordability and show you a personalised offer immediately. Existing customers with a pre-approved offer can sometimes get an instant decision; new applications more commonly take a bit longer while the bank verifies your documents.

Who this loan suits

  • Customers who want a fixed monthly instalment they can budget around, rather than a revolving credit facility
  • Both new and existing Standard Bank customers, though existing app users often get faster decisions
  • Borrowers who don’t want to put up an asset as security — the Term Loan is unsecured
  • Anyone comparing across banks — always check your personalised rate quote before committing, since Standard Bank’s stated maximum is a ceiling, not a typical rate

A Term Loan can also be used as a debt consolidation loan — combining several existing debts (credit cards, store accounts, other loans) into a single monthly instalment, potentially at a lower blended interest rate. Note that this is a different product from a Standard Bank Student Loan, which is a separate, education-specific facility not covered on this page.

Paying off your loan early

How fast you get the money, and consolidating other loans

If you’re an existing Standard Bank customer applying online via the App or Internet Banking, approved funds are typically paid out immediately. Existing customers who apply in-branch instead can expect funds within 24 to 48 working hours. New-to-bank applicants generally take longer, since income and identity still need to be verified from scratch.

Beyond combining your own existing debts into one instalment, Standard Bank’s Loan Consolidation product specifically lets you switch and combine up to three external, fixed-term personal loans from other lenders into a single Standard Bank loan account — separate from Debt Review, which is a formal, Debt Counsellor-led process for customers already in financial distress rather than simply looking to simplify their repayments.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I borrow from Standard Bank?

Between R1,000 and R300,000, depending on affordability and credit profile.

What fees apply to a Standard Bank personal loan?

A R69 monthly service fee on all loans, a once-off initiation fee ranging from R419.75 to R1,207.50 (VAT inclusive), and compulsory credit life insurance of up to R4.50 per R1,000 of outstanding balance.

What is the maximum interest rate on a Standard Bank loan?

Interest is personalised up to a maximum of prime plus 17.5% per annum as per NCA regulation — equivalent to 27.75% per annum only when prime is 10.25%; confirm the current rate.

What repayment terms are available?

Between 12 and 72 months, with a fixed instalment for the life of the loan.

Is a Standard Bank personal loan secured?

No, the Term Loan is unsecured — no asset needs to be pledged as collateral.

Can I pay off my Standard Bank loan early without a penalty?

Standard Bank advises checking directly whether a penalty applies before settling early — it doesn’t publish a blanket no-penalty policy. Most standard personal loan agreements in South Africa don’t carry early-settlement penalties under the National Credit Act, though larger agreements may.

How fast do I get the money after my Standard Bank loan is approved?

Immediately if you’re an existing customer applying online via the App or Internet Banking; within 24 to 48 working hours if you apply in-branch as an existing customer. New-to-bank applicants generally take longer.

How do I close my Standard Bank personal loan account?

A Term Loan closes automatically once it’s fully paid off — there’s no separate closure step. Request a settlement letter at your branch, from your Personal Banker, or via voice branch when you’re ready to pay it off.

Can Standard Bank consolidate loans I have with other banks?

Yes, its Loan Consolidation product can combine up to three external fixed-term personal loans into one Standard Bank account. This is different from Debt Review, a formal Debt Counsellor-led process for customers already in financial distress.

What’s the minimum income to qualify for a Standard Bank loan?

Standard Bank’s general credit criteria require a gross monthly salary of at least R3,500, paid into a transactional account, plus being 18 or older. It doesn’t publish a separate minimum specific to personal loans, and final approval depends on your full affordability assessment.

What documents do I need to apply for a Standard Bank personal loan?

A valid South African ID or Smart ID card, proof of residence not older than three months, your most recent payslip, and your last three months’ bank statements — especially if you don’t already bank with Standard Bank.

Do I need a Standard Bank account to apply for a personal loan?

No. You can apply through the Banking App or Internet Banking even if you don’t currently bank with Standard Bank.

Can I use a Standard Bank Term Loan to consolidate debt?

Yes, a Term Loan can combine several existing debts into one monthly instalment. This is different from a Standard Bank Student Loan, which is a separate education-specific product.
