UCount Rewards: Fees, Earning & Is It Worth R25/Month?

Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-20. This is not a new fact-check date.

Why trust this guide: This overview reflects Standard Bank’s official UCount Rewards registration, fee and earning mechanics as published on ucount.standardbank.co.za, cross-checked against the March 2026 UCount Rewards Programme Rules. UCount is a rewards programme, distinct from once-off merchant discounts — see the Card Discounts & Offers page for current promotional deals.

What is UCount Rewards?

UCount Rewards is Standard Bank’s points-based loyalty programme for Personal and Business Banking customers, running since 2013. It carries its own membership fee of R25 a month, paid by debit order from a Standard Bank personal account only (third-party accounts aren’t accepted). Customers who joined before 1 July 2019 and originally selected annual billing may still pay R300 a year instead, though the debit order can be switched to monthly at any time. Once registered, customers earn Rewards Points on qualifying purchases made with any qualifying Standard Bank personal Credit, Cheque or Debit card, with credit card spend earning at a boosted rate — up to 3 times more points than the same spend on a debit or cheque card. Points can then be redeemed in several ways, and customers can improve their Tier Level over time to unlock a higher earn rate.

Choose Your Own Rewards (CYOR)

UCount lets members personalise how they earn through its Choose Your Own Rewards feature: you select a focus category — Grocery, Lifestyle or Fashion — and earn up to 20% back in Rewards Points at designated Rewards Retailers within that category. This sits on top of the standard earn rate and the boosted grocery/fuel offers covered on the Card Discounts & Offers page, giving members some control over which part of their spending earns the most.

Who can join, and what if I’m under 18?

UCount Rewards is open to any Standard Bank customer with a transactional debit, cheque or credit card account that’s paid up to date. Minors are eligible to register, but only at a Standard Bank branch, and parent or guardian consent is required — it can’t be done online or in the app for under-18s.

Is the R25 monthly fee worth it?

The R25/month fee (R300/year) is a real cost that needs to be weighed against how much you’ll actually earn and redeem. It tends to pay for itself for customers who route regular grocery, fuel or credit card spend through qualifying Standard Bank cards at partner retailers — but if you rarely swipe a qualifying card or shop outside the partner network, the membership fee can outweigh the points you earn. Check your last few months of card spend against the current partner earn rates before committing, and cancel the debit order if the points aren’t clearing R25 a month in genuine value.

A word of caution on “up to” rates: in 2021, South Africa’s Advertising Regulatory Board ruled a Standard Bank UCount fuel-rewards ad misleading, because the advertised top rate only applied to about 1% of members who’d reached the highest Tier Level — the next-best tier earned less than a third of that. The “up to” figures throughout this page (and Standard Bank’s own marketing) describe a ceiling most members won’t reach immediately. Check your actual Tier Level in the App rather than assuming you’re earning the headline rate.

UCount Rewards vs card discounts: what’s the difference?

UCount Rewards is the ongoing points programme — you pay the R25 monthly membership fee and earn Points continuously on qualifying spend, choosing when and how to redeem them. Card discounts and merchant offers, covered separately on the Card Discounts & Offers page, are specific time-bound promotions (like a percentage back at a named retailer) that are often paid out through the UCount system but are a distinct, changeable layer on top of standard point-earning.

Do UCount Rewards Points expire?

Yes. UCount Rewards Points are valid for five years from the date they’re allocated to your Rewards Account. If you don’t redeem a batch of points within that five-year window, they expire and are lost — Standard Bank has confirmed it will notify members in advance of an expiry, including which portion of their balance is affected, so you get a chance to redeem before losing value. This is separate from time-bound vouchers or coupons earned through UCount’s Goals feature, which typically carry a much shorter two-week redemption window once issued and state their own expiry date on the voucher itself.

Watch out for UCount-related scams

Standard Bank has confirmed active fraud attempts specifically targeting UCount Rewards members. Scammers typically impersonate the programme via SMS, email or phone to try to extract your PIN, password, one-time PIN or full card number under the guise of “verifying” or “redeeming” your points. Standard Bank will never ask for these details to process a UCount transaction — manage your points only through the official UCount Rewards portal, the Standard Bank App, or by calling the UCount Rewards Contact Centre on 0860 826 868.

Frequently asked questions

Is UCount Rewards free to join?

No. UCount Rewards carries a R25 monthly membership fee (or R300/year for eligible legacy annual members), paid by debit order from a Standard Bank personal account.

Do I earn more points with a credit card?

Yes. Standard Bank credit card spend earns up to 3 times more UCount Rewards Points than the same spend on a debit or cheque card.

How much is a UCount Rewards point worth?

10 points equal R1, so 1,000 points are worth R100. Redemptions are capped at 200,000 points (R20,000) per transaction or per month.

What is Choose Your Own Rewards?

A UCount feature letting members pick a focus category — Grocery, Lifestyle or Fashion — to earn up to 20% back in Rewards Points at designated retailers within it.

Can a minor join UCount Rewards?

Yes, but only by registering in-branch with a parent or guardian’s consent — it can’t be done online or via the app.

How do I improve my UCount Tier Level?

Tier Level improves with continued qualifying spend and engagement with the programme, unlocking a higher Points earn rate.

How do I redeem UCount Rewards Points?

Points can be redeemed in several ways, including shopping, fuel, travel, Bidvest Premier lounge access, Notice Deposit and PureSave contributions, managed through the UCount Rewards portal or the Standard Bank App.

Do UCount Rewards Points expire?

Yes, five years from the date they’re allocated to your account. Standard Bank notifies members in advance of an expiry so you can redeem before losing the points.

Will I actually earn the “up to” rate advertised for UCount?

Probably not at first. South Africa’s Advertising Regulatory Board ruled a similar “up to” UCount claim misleading in 2021, since only about 1% of members reach the top Tier Level that unlocks it. Most members earn a lower rate until their Tier Level builds up.

Standard Bank Card Discounts & Offers: Current Merchant Deals

Why trust this guide: Offers below are drawn directly from Standard Bank’s and UCount’s own official pages, including precise spend caps and category exclusions rather than headline percentages alone. Merchant discounts change frequently and carry specific card, spend and channel conditions — always confirm current terms in the Standard Bank App or on standardbank.co.za immediately before relying on an offer.

Redemptions on all UCount offers are capped at 200,000 Rewards Points (R20,000) per transaction and per month. As a worked example from Standard Bank: a Tier 5 UCount member spending R500 on Checkers Sixty60 with a Standard Bank credit card earns R200 back in points, versus R25 back for the same spend on a debit card in-store — illustrating how much the card type and channel change the real payout.

All merchant offers carry their own T&Cs, minimum spend or qualifying-purchase conditions, and are subject to change or withdrawal by Standard Bank or the partner merchant at any time — the safest way to confirm what’s live for your specific card is inside the Standard Bank App’s rewards/offers section. Entries marked “Ongoing” have no published end date as at the Last Verified date, but Standard Bank can end any offer without notice.

How to activate and redeem offers

  • Most merchant discounts require your card to be registered for UCount Rewards first
  • Travel discounts are typically booked directly through Standard Bank Travel inside the Banking App
  • Grocery and fuel discounts usually apply automatically at qualifying merchants once your card is UCount-registered — no separate activation needed at the till
  • Check the “Redeem your credit card benefits” guide in Standard Bank’s Learn section for step-by-step instructions

Lounge access is bundled from Achieva and Titanium tier upward, subject to minimum monthly spend thresholds — Blue and Gold cardholders don’t get complimentary lounge visits.

How much can I get back on groceries?

Up to 30% back in-store or up to 40% back via Sixty60 in UCount Rewards Points at Checkers and Shoprite, capped at 20% of your monthly spend or R3,000 a month, whichever is reached first.

Do fuel rewards apply to any petrol station?

No — the published fuel offer applies specifically to Caltex and Astron Energy, subject to qualifying criteria.

Can I earn points on liquor or pharmacy purchases at Shoprite/Checkers?

No — Checkers Liquorshop, Shoprite Liquorshop, Checkers Outdoor, Checkers Little Me, UNIQ by Checkers, PetShop Science and MediRite Plus are excluded from the grocery rewards offer.

How do I book travel now that the UCount Travel Mall is gone?

Through Standard Bank Travel on the Banking App, or by calling +27 10 056 4980.

Are there any UCount competitions running right now?

Yes — as of August 2026, spending or redeeming R150+ at Checkers/Shoprite/Sixty60 enters you into a draw for 1 million Rewards Points (runs until 15 September 2026), and spending or redeeming R600+ at Makro enters you into a draw for a share of 200,000 points (runs until 31 August 2026). Both require an activated UCount card and are subject to T&Cs.
