Nedbank Greenbacks Rewards Explained: Earn, Levels & Redemption

Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-20. This is not a new fact-check date.

Quick answer: Greenbacks is Nedbank’s rewards programme, paying up to 2% cash back on card spend (double that on Greenbacks-linked American Express cards), plus category bonuses like up to 30% back at Checkers and rewards on bp fuel purchases. Membership is free with most Nedbank accounts — only pay-as-you-use account holders pay a linkage fee. You can redeem Greenbacks as cash, transfer them into savings or investments for bonus value, spend them on Avo SuperShop, or donate them to charity.

Greenbacks levels: how to earn more

Greenbacks isn’t a flat rewards rate for everyone — Nedbank runs a levels system based on your banking behaviour. You move up a level each time you meet a behavioural goal Nedbank sets, and higher levels unlock more rewards. The first step toward moving up is having your monthly income paid into the Nedbank account linked to your Greenbacks membership; further levels are unlocked by meeting additional banking goals over time. If you stop meeting the requirements for your current level, Nedbank can move you back down. Some enhanced earn rates also have a spending cap — once you’ve earned up to that cap in a period, your rate reverts to the standard rate for any further spend.

  • Withdraw as cash at any Nedbank ATM using a Greenbacks SHOP Card

Greenbacks don’t expire while your membership is active, but if your linked account closes or your Greenbacks membership is terminated, you have 30 days from Nedbank’s notice to redeem your balance before it’s forfeited.

Does Greenbacks cost anything?

Greenbacks for business

Nedbank also runs Greenbacks for business accounts. There are no levels to navigate — every business earns the same rewards regardless of size, simply by linking a Nedbank business account and paying with a Visa, Mastercard or Amex business card (Amex-linked cards again earn double). Membership is included free with a Business Bundle 50 or Business Bundle 100 account; Startup Bundle and Business Pay-as-you-use accountholders pay R30 a month, billed annually, to join.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 2% cash back on eligible card spend, with Greenbacks-linked American Express cards earning double that of a Mastercard or Visa card.
