Investec at a glance
Investec was founded in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1974 and has grown into an Anglo–South African international banking and wealth management group, today dual-listed on the JSE and LSE. In South Africa it operates as Investec Bank Limited, headquartered in Sandton, offering private banking, business and corporate banking, investment banking, and wealth and investment management alongside Investec Life insurance.
Key facts
Investec is ranked as the Best Private Bank and Wealth Manager in South Africa for 13 consecutive years, and the best in Africa for Customer Service, by the Financial Times of London. In May 2026 the bank set out plans to grow its South African private banking client base from about 128,000 to roughly 250,000 by 2030, targeting the affluent segment below its traditional high-net-worth base — see the News & Updates page for details.
You’ll recognise Investec by its distinctive black-and-white zebra-striped branding, used across its offices, cards and marketing worldwide as part of its visual identity.
Who is Investec best suited for?
- Salaried professionals earning R800,000+ a year (or R600,000+ under 30 with a relevant qualification), who want one consolidated account rather than separate bank, credit card and forex products
- Entrepreneurs and business owners who want a dedicated private banker rather than a call centre
- Frequent international travellers who benefit from multicurrency banking, a Visa Platinum card usable in pounds, dollars, euros and rand, and airport lounge access once they reach Rewards partnership level 2
- Medical professionals and young qualified professionals, for whom Investec runs tailored offerings with reduced fees or enhanced finance terms
- Families wanting to bank multiple members, including children and young adults, under one relationship
It’s a weaker fit if you’re looking for a free or low-fee everyday account, don’t meet the income/qualification threshold, or want a large physical branch network for cash-heavy, walk-in banking.
When the fee stops being worth it
It’s worth being honest about the trade-off: the R705 monthly fee buys a bundle of dedicated banker access, multicurrency banking, airport lounges and travel perks. If you qualify but bank almost entirely through an app, rarely travel internationally, and don’t use a private banker for advice, you’re paying a premium fee for benefits you’re not drawing on — the account still works, but the value case weakens considerably. It’s a genuine fit for people who’ll actually use the relationship and the lifestyle benefits, not simply a status purchase.
Investec’s core products
Private Bank Account
A single, consolidated account combining everyday transactional banking with a Visa Platinum credit facility, for one monthly fee of R705 (R355 for Young Professionals under 30). The fee covers day-to-day banking with unlimited free local and international ATM withdrawals and no annual card or facility fees (international banks may still levy their own fees). To qualify you generally need to earn R800,000 a year, or be under 30 and earning less with a relevant professional qualification — see the Young Professionals section below.
Visa Platinum credit card and multicurrency banking
The card that comes with the account is priced at prime, with up to 45 days interest-free on purchases and a budget facility for larger expenses over up to 60 months, and can be loaded onto Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Garmin Pay and Fitbit Pay. Clients can also add multicurrency pockets in dollars, pounds and euros from Investec Online or the app, with Intelligent Routing selecting the correct pocket automatically based on the currency of a transaction.
Savings accounts
Investec offers instant-access, notice, and fixed-term deposit accounts, including a tax-free option, with no monthly fees on any savings account and a minimum deposit of R100,000 to open one.
Finance for individuals
Investec offers home loan and vehicle finance for new or pre-owned vehicles at rates of up to prime minus 1%. Young Professionals under 30 may qualify for up to 100% home loan financing on their first property.
Investec Rewards
Private Bank and Private Business Account holders are automatically enrolled in Investec Rewards at no extra cost, with no limit on points earned and points that never expire. Points can be redeemed as cash, against the monthly account fee, for unit trusts, or through Investec Travel.
Young Professionals: what you actually get beyond the reduced fee
Investec’s Young Professionals track is more than a discounted R355 monthly fee. Two benefits are worth knowing about specifically: LifeStarter, which gives R25,000 of complimentary life insurance to Private Banking clients under 30, and an Online Share Trading Account with no minimum account value, a reduced flat brokerage fee of 0.5%, and the annual administrative fee waived. Eligibility itself is under 30 with a relevant professional qualification, or earning R600,000 or more a year — note some qualifications may unlock reduced earning criteria, so it’s worth applying even if you’re below R600,000 if you hold a relevant professional qualification.
Enigma: Investec’s invitation-only higher tier
Above the standard Private Bank Account, Investec also runs Enigma, an elevated, invitation-based private banking tier with its own enhanced benefits — including an additional travel insurance policy specific to Enigma clients and a dedicated Enigma Experience support team, integrated into the same InTransit lounge programme used for standard Private Bank Account holders. Investec doesn’t publicly publish Enigma’s income or net-worth entry criteria, so if you think you might qualify, the right route is to ask your Private Banker directly rather than apply for it as a standalone product.
Passport and Smart ID applications
Investec’s Sandton office hosts a Department of Home Affairs eHomeAffairs service point, letting clients apply for a new Smart ID card or passport in branch — part of a broader partnership between Home Affairs and several major South African banks, not an Investec-exclusive perk, but a genuine convenience if you bank in Sandton.
