Does Postbank Offer Credit Cards or Loans? Here’s What It Actually Sells

Source: existing AfrifinHub article. Original WordPress modification: 2026-09-18. This is not a new fact-check date.

Quick answer: No. Postbank does not currently offer credit cards, personal loans, store cards or overdraft facilities to retail customers. Its entire retail range is savings accounts (Smart Save, Bakgotsi, Term Save, Term Save Plus) and debit-card transactional accounts (Mzansi, Flexi, Aspire), plus the SASSA grant card. This isn't a temporary outage or a page you're missing — it reflects Postbank's actual product range and regulatory status as of August 2026.

Why doesn't Postbank offer credit?

Postbank is a savings-focused, state-owned institution, not yet a fully licensed commercial bank. It currently holds a Financial Services Provider (FSP) licence from the FSCA, granted in March 2026, which allows it to give financial advice and offer intermediary services — but it has not yet obtained a full commercial banking licence from the South African Reserve Bank via the Prudential Authority. Lending products like credit cards, personal loans and overdrafts typically require that fuller banking licence and the credit-risk infrastructure that comes with it, which Postbank is still building out as part of its longer-term transformation strategy.

In short: Postbank was built, and has historically operated, as a deposit-taking savings institution rather than a lender. Its 2026 roadmap is focused on stabilising its core savings and transactional business and completing the separation from the South African Post Office, not launching new credit products.

What Postbank actually offers instead

  • Smart Save — everyday savings account, up to 4.10% interest, no monthly fee
  • Bakgotsi — stokvel/group savings account with dual-signatory withdrawal controls
  • Term Save & Term Save Plus — fixed-term deposits from R1,000, terms of 1–24 months
  • Mzansi, Flexi & Aspire — debit-card transactional accounts (no credit facility attached)
  • SASSA card — administers the debit card used for social grant payments

All of these are deposit or debit-card products — money you put in and spend or save, not money Postbank lends you. See the Bank Accounts page for full fees and interest rates.

What you won't find at Postbank

  • Credit cards of any kind (no Gold, Platinum or entry-level tier)
  • Personal loans, whether secured or unsecured
  • Overdraft facilities on Mzansi, Flexi or Aspire accounts
  • Store cards or point-of-sale instalment credit
  • Vehicle or home loan financing

Where to look if you need credit

If a credit card, personal loan or overdraft is what you're after, South Africa's fully licensed commercial banks — Capitec, FNB, Absa, Standard Bank, Nedbank, TymeBank and others — offer these products, each with its own eligibility criteria, credit checks and pricing. Since Postbank doesn't currently run a credit check for most of its own accounts, it can be a reasonable place to build a banking history and savings track record first, even if you plan to apply for credit elsewhere later. Always compare interest rates, fees and total cost of credit across lenders, and only borrow what you can comfortably repay.

Be careful of sites claiming to offer a "Postbank loan"

Because Postbank genuinely doesn't offer loans or credit cards, any website, advert or message claiming otherwise should raise a red flag. At least one domain has been found advertising "Postbank business loans" and lending solutions that don't exist in Postbank's real product range — a strong sign of an impersonator or clone site rather than a genuine Postbank channel. Postbank's only official website is postbank.co.za. If you're offered a "Postbank loan" anywhere else, treat it as a scam, don't provide personal or banking details, and verify directly with Postbank Customer Care on 0800 53 54 55 before proceeding.
